Theoretical Perspective in Relation to Professional Developmnet

Hi everyone, This is my course, Cache level 3 Diploma in 'Early Years Workforce' requirement to join online forums and share/discuss the importance of reflection in relation to professional development. I did my research on different theoretical perspectives on reflection.

I will be obliged if anyone can join in and share their thoughts. My research is as follow:

Kolb’s learning cycle:
Kolb’s suggested that it is important to reflect on our learning and it is important to follow the consistent order that he presented in the learning cycle. The cycle is based on four stages and each stage links others. Those stages are as follow:
1. The first stage is concrete experience, it means to do something and have a learning experience. Like the practitioner helping children to complete the large forest puzzle 
2. This stage is basically a self-evaluation stage where practitioners need to reflect on own experience by considering this what has been learned and how did it go? What didn’t go well and what can be improved further to make the practice can be possible by discussing with colleagues or own analysis.
3. The third stage is abstract observation, it is about concluding your findings and developing new ideas for next time. For example, we can write numbers on the puzzles so children won’t be tired and bored of doing it.
4. the fourth Active experimentation stage that means to try out whatever you have learned and implement in the practice. This would make the practice more beneficial. The cycle thus continues from where it has started i.e. stage one.

Gibbs’ reflective cycle:
Gibbs’ reflective cycle was partly based on Kolb's’ learning cycle. Gibb’s cycle of learning consists of 6 different steps:
1. Description: what happened:
2.  Feelings: what and how did you feel about it?
3.  Evaluation: what went well and what didn’t?
4. Analysis: why did it happen?
5. Conclusion: From the analysis, we conclude that what else could have done.
6. Action plan:  analysis and conclusion help to set the next plan that what can be done next time?
Nature of this reflective cycle is ‘never-ending’ because the action that is taken in the final stage will feedback into the first stage, and begin the process again.

Schon process of continuous learning:
Schon defined a reflective practice that through reflection professionals get aware of their knowledge learn from experiences. He suggested different processes of reflection.
Reflection in action: It is when the practitioner thinks on the spot about what is happening, how is it going and how successfully dealing with the tasks.
Reflection on the action: it means practitioners evaluate what has happened, what went well and what things need to be improved for future practice.
Ladders of reflection: practitioner used their actions and then reflection on action make a ladder. It means that every action and reflection repetitively followed each other. Through this repetitive action, the reflections become the article for further reflection.

I also researched these theorists. Out of them 3 I can personally connect to Gibbs' reflective cycle. I find it easy to follow and gets the best practice out of me. I like reflecting on every aspect of an experience and find ways to improve by putting an action plan together so I can move forward but improving. 

I also read about Schon's process of continuous learning. I do believe this is another theory that relates well for practitioners. We are always learning in the job. 
The reflection in action is my favourite part of his theory. Being put on the spot to talk about what is going well, what is happening is great because you are in that moment, you don't later on try and remember what happened to reflect.
