Thanks so much for your advice Sue. I have 3 children 16,8 and 1 so I'm used to being kept on my toes and love a challenge! Perfect, I'm feeling very positive about the months ahead.

Roughly how long did it take you to complete the first ten assignments to be able to do the practical?

Sorry for all the questions.

Hmm, difficult one. I spent 6 months doing the assignments as I was juggling Mum, kids, grandkids and full-time work. You can do the assignments a heck of a lot quicker than that if you're in a hurry? Feedback when studying online is very quick.

6 Months sounds good to me, I don't want to go crazy. I want to soak it all up and make sure I have a full understanding of the theory.

I just wanted a rough idea when l should book onto the practical as reading back, they seem to book up quick

Hi Rosemary! Sorry to read you've been having some trouble with the forum. We did merge one of your posts from two days ago into this conversation so that people on your course would be sure to see it. You should have received an email to inform you of the merge. But it looks like you've found the conversation now and can chat with your fellow students. We hope you find the forum to be of great help!

Hi Emma, I've just finished my assessment's and waiting for my practical dates, I found the course interesting and enjoyed studying after a long long break. I miss the work so cant wait to go on the practical even if I do find it a little nerve racking going away by myself. Annie, Rosemary and I keep in contact via fb, its easier than this forum to navigate. It would be nice to chat.

Hi Hollowaybabe, keep going... you ́re nearly there.  Some points that might help you:

1.  Relates to what is it that you need to know to do your research?  You need to consider if there ́s a market and what size that market is, right?  Is there a need for it? Would you have a lot of competition in the area you are interested in? Does the law allow you?  that sort of thing.  Even though the question asks for only a "list" of the factors (which is what I supplied) my tutor expected more.

2.  Relates to what type of research would you use for FHP.  How will you find out if your business is possible, if there is a need, etc etc.  Will you go door to door? will you call your prospective clients?  Will you write them a letter?

3. Benefits of knowing or being comfortable with your service.  Is it important to know what you ́re doing and why?  Are you able to answer with knowledge to questions?  For example, if you have a new patient and you have a questionnaire where one of the questions is "Do you suffer from diabetes"? and the patient answers NO. Then you are about to perform a service and you see a lesion on the bottom of the foot and the patient says... Ooops, I didn ́t even know I had that.  What does that tell you? Or you see the state of the nails, etc etc

4.  What are you going to do to attract your clientele? For example in my case, I will be working mostly with elderly people and they don ́t really like going out in winter as it is dangerous with the rain and snow and most of them don ́t drive... so business will slow down for me in the winter months which are quite a few.. so I am advertising home visits as I will have the time.  That won ́t happen in summer as I hope to be very busy but they will appreciate me coming to see them and they all live nearby. There are quite a few things one can do, like... have other services?

5. How will you contribute to the good management  of your business?  You need a good business plan and you need to stick to it.  Plan yourself for the next 5 years maybe and go back to your plan often to see that you are still on track.  Where do you want your business to be in 1 year ́s time?  Goals?  How about money.  How are you financing? Are you spending more than you should? Are you a good accountant? etc etc

6. What good will your business plan  do? If it ́s well written you will profit from it as it will be your guide during the period of it... be it 3 or even 5 years.  If you need to borrow money, you will need a business plan, won ́t you?  How will you convince your lender that your business has a future?

Hope it helps.  I ́m sure your tutor will be happy to help you if you are stuck.

Best of luck
CC

Can anyone that has already done their practical feed us with outcome?   How thorough the practice was?  Enough to build confidence with the scalpel and the drill to go out and work?  Do you get to see and work on corns, calluses, ingrown toe nails?

Would be great to know, thanks

I think it would be really good if we all got together and each sent a similar e-mail, maybe then they would act. One student waiting to go on the practical before the awarding body change date has told me that our qualification will NOT allow us to further our studies at a college or university, however the new one will.. That sounds like we have been sold a substandard product. They have asked me vie e-mail to ring them up and speak to them direct but I have not yet had time to do so, it would have been nice for them to ring me!
.............COME ON PEOPLE LETS GET AN ANSWER........

Surely, if that's the case, then everybody is entitled to an automatic upgrade - unless it is a money making ploy !
Will this mean that the present diploma will not even be recognised for insurance purposes - unless we pay more for the so-called 'UPGRADE' ???
Hmmm.

I have been in touch via e-mail but they want me to ring , I don't see the point, I've requested the upgrade, they have all my details so whats the problem. I think they have a responsibly to up grade all pass students not let us wait until the possibility of being unable to get insurance or and more expensive product. I think they are after more money and that why they want me to ring, but this is a problem of their making so its their reasonably not ours

End of April  when I was sorting out my practical,  I spoke to "James"  (who I understand looks after the bookings) and I was told that I would get  both " NCFE and ABC accreditation if I chose to.  So far, have only received NCFE.

Hi folks. I've recently started the FHP course and am about to hand in assignment 2. I'm really glad I've found this thread as there seem to be quite a few people in the same boat as me! Was feeling a little lost as I've not done any type of studying in about 15 years, and it all seems a little overwhelming :-/

Hi all,
Have just submitted assignment 1 in today for FHP course. Looked at doing the course a couple of years ago but the travelling to Bude for the practical put me off slightly especially with my young family. Hoping the windsor site will be up and running by the time I need to take my practical! Decided to go for it as looking to get out of nursing and I love feet! I am not on face book but will keep an eye on this thread as picking up some good tips from you guys and it's great to see how other people are finding the course.

Hi there! I'm just starting assignment 2. I studied chiropody (as it was called) for a year some years ago...then went off into a different career...and I've come back to finish what I started in a way. I've still got all my kit too...the advantages of being a hoarder! I forgot how much fun A&P can be ;) Have you got any more info on the Windsor site Lisa? That would be closer for me too.

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to upgrade from the 5 day to the 11 day practical?  I'm currently doing the basic FHP course ready for practical on November 14th and am wondering if 5 days will be enough to get me confident enough to go 'on the road'.  Also, I'm planning to do domiciliary work only and wondering what I can offer that others perhaps don't.  I've thought of free first consultations to help build a base.  Does anyone have any thoughts on this.  Sorry to be using the forum a bit much but I've only just found it and it looks to be a great source of useful information.

Hi Gof,
I don't think free first consultations is the way to go. Make sure they see you sanitize your hands as well as their feet. Personally I don't like using gloves except when putting cream on at the end. I also start by using a pulse meter and a Doppler. They really like this, and it stands you out from the crowd. I've had reports from clients nurses who love the way I do things. Another good thing is not to open the sterilised packet of instruments until you are in front of them so that they can see how hygienic you are. It's all good stuff, believe me !

That's all good advice Bobby and I am very grateful to you for taking the time to reply. Part of my plan is to do exactly what you suggest about pulse and doppler checks as I know how important it is to keep a careful watch for the ischaemic foot. My podiatrist doesn't do that and as a diabetics I think she should. I also agree on the importance of sterilisation and am currently looking at vacuum autoclaves. Any advice on them?

Just make sure that it has a temperature high enough for Chiropodists. There are many out there, some very overpriced as well. Be careful not to buy a dentistry one as they are not hot enough. It never fails to amaze me that dentists can shove instruments in your mouth that have been sterilised at a lower temperature than what we use on feet ! Believe it or not - it's totally legal, but not for us !
