Hi ladies, i have just enrolled after completing the veterinary support diploma. Could you please tell me what course materials are provided for the dog grooming proffessional course? Also wondered if anybody would be interested in a facebook group where we could keep in touch and help one another out? It really helped with my other course, i would be happy to set one up :(

Hi all,

Just submitted assignment 1 and looking forward to starting assignment 2 once I have had the feedback.

Looking forward to tutors first comments to see if what I am doing is correct. I don't want to over complicate things as I think to the point is the best way forward, less waffle.

Anyone that can offer any support or guidance much appreciated, Oh also got great deal from Amazon on some of the recommended book so anyone after books check it out

I'm half way through this course now and finally starting to learn new things I already have a lot of canine knowledge and this is an extra i'm working towards whilst at work. So the 1st 4 assigments I already knew the stuff so its nice to actually be learning something new now.

are you doing this course for leisure or as a potential career? i have a full time office job (which i HATE), I have always wanted to work with dogs, so I thought this would be the perfect job to work towards as I already do my springer spaniels' coats and my neighbours bichon frisé, so I'm hoping to eventually work from home.

For all you doing the dog grooming course, and wanting to learn the practical side i have found it really good to watch how to groom dogs on youtube, they have loads of them which take you step by step and the grooming tools to use, also practise on your own dogs or familes and friends dogs, to gain the practical side, i have just ordered a book called Notes from the grooming table by Melissa Verplank as ive been told this is a very good book to have -Notes from the Grooming Table offers comprehensive and detailed instruction on grooming techniques in a clear and accessible fashion. Covering over 150 different breeds, this book offers full instructions for each dog breed, from basic to advanced techniques. Additional topics include guides to key grooming tools and fundamental grooming techniques, coat types, and aspects of general canine anatomy. Includes detailed black and white illustrations throughout. I just thought i would share.xxx

I have done level 3 and now nearly finished level 4. It's a great course and I have learned loads from it. I have three dogs and now have the confidence to groom them myself. I am also looking at it as a job in the future where I do pet sitting and grooming.

Morning, You have lots to do between now and March! It is hard studying alone and wondering if other people have better techniques for learning. Its something I really want to do but I feel a class taught situation would have been better. Its meeting like minded people that I want and ideas to bounce off. I have till August to finish mine. We should keep in touch and help each other?

Hi there Katherine, i finished my level 3 end of last year, i offered to work on the weekends for free to gain experiance, and done friends and families dogs. I am now self employed as a mobile dog groomer and its going really well. I have a group i have set up on facebook for trainee groomers and their are some really good groomers with years of experiance on there and give great advice about the practical side link is up the top of this page. I really enjoyed studying with stonebridge and it was the best course that i have done, im hoping that by the end of the year i will own my own grooming salon :) dreams and goals have motivated me.x

Hi, i am on my final assignment of level 4. This is my preferred way of learning as i am unable to attend a college due to my health and this way of learning has been a motivator to keep going. I did 4 modules a month for the paper version method. i have done both levels in 9 months.

I read the module, then i make notes. If it is complicated i end up writing down the whole thing using my own words. When its time to do the questions, i refer to my notes.

When i got to trimming nails, i practiced on my own dog, but before actually trimming the nail, my vet showed me how to do them.

I would always try something out on my own dog when learning something new. After completing level 3 i gave all 3 of my dogs a full groom nothing technical but a easy maintenance length.

I also watched u tube clips of grooming the particular breed i was working on.

My motivator was also receiving good feedback from tutors.

Hope this helps.

Hello Lee,
well done & good luck with your final paper! do you work as a groomer? i have been out of grooming for a while, this course is bringing it all back & very refreshing. yes when i signed up i saw this note:

FREE Wahl Multicut Electric Pet Clipper Kit With DVD with this Dog Grooming course (R.R.P £27.55). This is a mains operated clipper, completely versatile classic design with good balance. It has an adjustable taper arm for variable cutting lengths, high precision, rustproof, chrome plated blades.

I thought i would check before i go out & buy some lol
Thank you
Jacqui

Hi Jacqui

Thanks. I am taking both the diploma and advanced diploma to hopefully open a grooming salon. I didnt see the free clipper promotion. However is there much difference between wahl clippers used in hairdressing salons as opposed to dog salons?. I have seen some dog clippers on websites and they seem to be in their hundreds of pounds range. I would imagine you can buy all the blade sizes for the wahl clippers, without paying such huge amounts for the ones advertised for dogs only. Are you going to open a salon or go mobile?. Im located in the Yorks/Lincs area

Regards
